Postdoc position on infrared spectro-microscopy in the MIRAS beamline at ALBA synchrotron

ALBA Synchrotron Light Facility, Barcelona, Spain
Application deadline: 06 Apr 2026

ALBA synchrotron in Barcelona (Spain) is now geared towards its upgrade to a 4th generation facility, ALBA-II. The project, scheduled to see the new photon beam on 2031, includes the construction of 3 new beamlines and the upgrade of the operating ones.

The MIRAS beamline is providing vibrational microspectroscopy in the far- and mid-IR spectral regimes (1 μm to ∼100 μm) at 2.4-14 μm spatial resolution for chemical mapping. The beamline features the most important geometries for sample analysis, that is, transmission, reflection, attenuated total reflection (ATR) and grazing incidence. The beamline is equipped with a Bruker Vertex 70v spectrometer coupled to a Hyperion 3000 microscope, featuring a MCT detector for high-sensitivity point measurements and a FPA detector for rapid macroimaging.

MIRAS serves the community with solid user-services to a wide user community since 2016 and develops new approaches to bring unique capabilities to the growing user community in life sciences and as well as environmental and material sciences. In life sciences, MIRAS enables label-free studies of cells, tissues, and biomolecules, supporting cancer diagnostics, drug-response monitoring, and metabolic fingerprinting. It is provided with a Live cells setup, a Linkam stage and a freeze-dryer. In material sciences, MIRAS is strongly focused in the area of energy storage and catalysis.

To support this effort, we offer a new 6-year postdoctoral position at MIRAS beamline. As a postdoctoral scientist, you will drive the beamline capabilities and foster existing and potential user communities, collaborate with the beamline scientists to push correlative methods within specific scientific programs, interact with the ALBA staff to develop advanced spectro-microscopy tools, promote new methodologies for the beamline upgrade and present technical reports and publications.

Deadline for applications: 6th April 2026.
