The University of Sussex has a strong profile of biomedical research, with particular strengths in cell biology and cancer (including the MRC Genome Damage and Stability Centre), neuroscience, and infection and immunity. The biomedical research portfolio is augmented by a Translational Drug Discovery Group who work closely with the basic scientists to discover new drugs for treating cancer, viral diseases, and psychiatric and neurological disorders.
As part of a programme of growing our Biomedical Sciences research, we wish to appoint two Structural Biologists with biological interests that relate to our existing basic and translational biomedical research strengths. The School of Life Sciences at Sussex is very well equipped for all aspects of modern structural biology, with state-of-the-art facilities for molecular biology, recombinant expression in bacterial and eukaryotic systems, biochemistry, biophysics and X-ray crystallography. Excellent synchrotron access (~ 2 days/month) is available through rolling beam allocation programmes at Diamond and ESRF, and there is a strong existing structural biology activity in the School (Aidan Doherty, Tony Oliver, Laurence Pearl, Chris Prodromou, Mark Roe, Louise Serpell).
The successful applicant will have an established reputation for applying structural techniques to address important biomedical questions, and a good track record in attracting research funding. The appointments will be at the level of Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) – exceptional candidates may be considered at Professorial level.
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to make informal contact with the Head of the School of Life Sciences, Professor Laurence Pearl FRS (Laurence.pearl@sussex.ac.uk) and the Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Prof. Alison Sinclair (a.j.sinclair@sussex.ac.uk).
Applicants should also attach a Statement of Research Interests and Goals (max 5 sides) and the names of at least three referees.
