As scientists across the world focus their efforts to combat COVID-19, Stephen K Burley (Henry Rutgers Chair and University Professor at Rutgers University, and Chair of Instruct-ERIC's Independent Scientific Advisory Board) explains why it is important to exploit the wealth of open-access data to prepare for future outbreaks. In a World View for Nature Journal, Professor Burley describes the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors, and calls on world leaders to provide incentives for drug and vaccine developers to develop therapies in reserve against future disease.
