4th Practical Workshop on Helical Symmetry

Training
Date: 03-Aug-2026 to 07-Aug-2026

We are pleased to announce the fourth edition of the Grenoble practical workshop focused on the determination of helical symmetry in biological polymers imaged by cryo-EM. The workshop will take place online from August 3rd to 7th, 2026.

Please note that due to specific procedural requirements, projects involving amyloids or microtubules will not be accepted.

As in previous editions, we are honored to welcome a distinguished speaker: Ed Egelman, whose expertise will greatly enrich our discussions.

Determining helical parameters continues to be a major challenge for many researchers. This workshop is designed to provide practical, hands-on guidance through the complexities of this process. Topics will include interpreting power spectra, analyzing 2D class averages, and examining raw data to extract meaningful structural insights.

While Helixplorer will play a central role in our practical sessions, we also encourage participants to explore alternative approaches to address a variety of research needs.

Beyond helical parameter determination, we will also explore broader reconstruction strategies, including managing flexible helices, working with multiple symmetries, and integrating data from different filament symmetries using subtraction techniques.

We welcome applicants at all career stages (PhD students, postdocs, senior scientists, and beyond) who are currently working on helical samples and facing structural analysis challenges. During the workshop, participants will use their own data, sharing selected raw images, 2D class averages, and power spectra with the organizers. The specific identity and function of your protein or filament will remain confidential.

To apply, please email your application (including a brief description of your project and the difficulties you’re encountering, as well as examples from your raw data and 2D class averages with the corresponding pixel size) to:

Application deadline: July 1st.

We look forward to another engaging and fruitful workshop and hope to see you online in August!
