Fully-funded PhD position in structural biology of mitochondrial Complex IV

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, France
Application deadline: 15 Jul 2026

The ESRF MXIS group and the Institute for Advanced Biosciences (IAB) in Grenoble are jointly offering a fully-funded 3-year PhD position to study how mutations in the mitochondrial respiratory Complex IV genes drive Complex IV remodelling and contribute to chemoresistance in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).

The project integrates structural biology — SAXS and cryo-EM at the ESRF — with biochemical, biophysical and cell-based approaches at the IAB, including RNA-seq and mitochondrial phenotyping before and after cytarabine treatment. The aim is to build a mechanistic model linking Complex IV alterations to disrupted mitochondrial homeostasis and reduced drug sensitivity.

We are looking for a candidate with a degree allowing enrolment in a PhD (MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea or equivalent) in chemistry, biology or a closely related field. A background in molecular biology, structural biology and/or bioinformatics is an asset. Proficiency in English (the working language at the ESRF) is required. The successful candidate will be enrolled at Université Grenoble Alpes (EDCSV Doctoral School), with an ideal start date in September 2026.

More details and how to apply.

Informal enquiries are welcome to Julie Mondet (JMondet@chu-grenoble.fr) or Montserrat Soler-Lopez (solerlop@esrf.fr).

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the deadline of 15 July 2026.
