The OPIC (Oxford Particle Imaging Centre, UK) facility has undergone further exciting new upgrades in recent months. Highlights include extensive improvements to the Krios G3i, including Windows10 software upgrade, fringe-free illumination (FFI), Aberration free image shift (AFIS), a Falcon IV detector and SelectrisX energy filter, which have served to massively increase data collection throughput (approximately 450-500 movies/hr) and quality (apoferritin at 1.5 Å and a small integral membrane protein to 3.2 Å Gold-Standard-FSC = 0.143 resolution).
Installation of PACETomo/SerialEM have enabled rapidly PACEd tomography data collections (ca. 5-10 tomograms per hour for a +/- 60 ° dose symmetric tilt scheme).
The latest new technology is the Alveole micropatterning device (pictured) for precise sample application to grids and the team are excited to begin using this for projects and proposals.
